Philadelphia Archbishop says equality ruling will 'work against human dignity itself'

by Jeremy Hooper

Even retaining the ability to look a gay person in the eye and say, "YOUR MARRIAGE WILL NEVER EARN RESPECT IN MY CHURCH, SINNER!" is not enough for Philadelphia's Archbishop. Despite the fact that today's ruling speaks only to civil marriage and fully allows people like him to deny a same-sex couple, should that couple seek to marry in the church, Bishop Chaput becomes the latest in a long line of high-profile Catholics who seem to think that both God and Caesar are under their exclusive control:

Well, we can both agree that human interaction and dignity are both suffering because of this marriage debate, father. I'll let history decide if that is due to those of us who are pushing for more love or because of those who appointed themselves God's earthly adjudicators of who is and is not entitled to equal love and basic respect.
