'Stealth' nom Roberts assisted 'mo rights fight?

by Jeremy Hooper

According to the LA Times, Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts helped gay rights activists in a 1996 Supremes case that resulted in a landmark ruling protecting folks from discrimination based on sexual orientation. Though he didn't argue the case or directly file the legal briefs, lawyers involved tell the Times that Roberts was "instrumental in reviewing filings and preparing oral arguments."

Roberts's work on the case was "pro bono," the ruling was "pro-equality," and those who will later today release press releases decrying the news are "pro-family."
