Wash U prof. defends homophobia, offends homosexuals
A Washington University professor is coming under fire, or at least BB pellets, for an essay on his personal website titled "In Defense of Homophobia, in which he attempts to rationalize anti-gay sentiment, decries gay men for contaminating the blood supply, and recommends that queers suppress their desires.
Some on the campus are saying that the teacher, Jonathan Katz, has crossed a discriminatory line, since the personal site can be found by clicking through the Washington University Physics Department website. Others, including a spokesman for the school, say Katz is merely exercising his opinions, and has the right to do so. A third, much larger group is saying, "Let's go get drunk."
Katz defends his statements, saying they represent his "moral judgement...that certain behavior is evil and immoral." Which of course means that Wash U's queer students will likely make the scheduling judgement that taking Katz's classes would be "unwise and awkward."
