Principal yanks gay-friendly article; by 'gay-friendly article' we mean a homo-positive newspaper column, not an 'I love queers'-declaring 'a'
Toni McCabe, principal of Ridgeview High School in Clay County, FL, has reportedly pulled the latest edition of the school's student newspaper in order to silence a bisexual student's queer-positive column. The AP quotes the student, Katie Thompson, as saying that McCabe told her the article, titled "Homosexuality is Not a Choice," was "too mature for a high school audience."
Ya know, it's teen-related times like this that we can't help but wonder, if faced with a similar situation:
a) Give up, admit defeat, and head to the Max
b) Fight Mr. Belding (Richard, not his brother Rod) to have a new edition of the Bayside News printed, this time with her article intact
c) Transfer to Valley, where press restrictions are less oppressive
d) Sit the episode out and let Tori handle this one
The answer is, of course, nothing, as she's fictional. However, to our Florida friend who exists outside of the realm of reruns, we say: Do not back down on this. Your principal is out of line, your peers need and have every right to hear such a message, don't let anyone tell you differently! In this age of extreme conformity and pressure to emulate ridiculously spoiled waifs, it's refreshing to hear of a young lady keeping the spirit alive.
Now to find a way to weave Screech into a hate crimes legislation post...
