Survey: Smear the queer still played in Iowa schools

by Jeremy Hooper

According to a new survey from the Iowa Pride Network, 92.3% of the state's high school students report hearing homophobic remarks frequently in their schools, 83.3% of LGBT students report being verbally harassed because of their sexual orientation, and 74.8% of the teens report that faculty never or rarely intervene when homophobic remarks are made in their presence.

According to a quick survey of our own Clinton era memory banks, we also embarrassingly embraced a bit of anti-gay sentiment during our teen years, indicating that Iowa's adoloescent 'phobes might want to question the motivations behind their queer-unfriendliness before hurling their next insult.
