HRC: '05 wasn't so sh*tty
According to the Human Rights Campaign, 2005 was a record year for GLBT state legislative victories, with more state-level anti-discrimination bills passing this year than in any previous twelve-month session, fifteen states refusing to amend their constitution to ban queer nuptials, and California becoming the first state ever to pass a measure legalizing same-sex marriage. Though reminding us that we still have a ways to go, HRC prez Joe Solmonese says, “Until every state treats its gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender citizens with dignity, respect and equality under the law, our work as a community will not be done.”
Which is of course good for Joe, as heading an organization that fights for LGBT civil rights is a much more necessary job when there are still rights for which to fight. Though here's hoping that as '06 gets going and this big ol' train of tolerance keeps truckin' through the nation, Joe's position (as well as that of our own) will be slowly rendered as unneeded as another season of "The Apprentice." When that happens, all of us who fight for the gays on a daily basis can finally return to our true passion: Horticulture.
2005 -- we've had our ups and down, but all and all, you really weren't such a bastard. After the taint that was '04, you were a welcome change. As for 2006 -- we could totally use that waffle iron we saw yesterday in Williams-Sonoma, so if you'll be a dear and let us walk down an aisle during one of your months, that would fantastic. Oh, and please don't let America be blown off the face of the Earth on your watch, as that would also prevent us from obtaining the aforementioned waffle-making appliance. Thanks.
