HRC confronts Brownback on 'fruits' label; we get all up in our grocer's face regarding pineapple's Dole sticker
The Human Rights Campaign is calling on U.S. Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan) to clarify remarks he made in a recent Rolling Stone interview, in which he apparently referred to Swedish gay citizens as "fruits." We'd have to agree with HRC, as we think it would have been far more clever for the senator to have called the Swedish "meatballs."
In a a letter to Senator "my name is only two letters away from 'Brokeback,' but my gay sentiment is worlds apart," HRC prez Joe Solmonese says, in part, "Senator, your use of the term "fruits" to describe gays sank far below the level of dignified discourse Americans rightfully expect of their elected officials," adding, "In an apparent attempt to use a Biblical passage to derogatorily jab at gays and lesbians, you have stepped well over the line of decorum and common decency."
To which we would only like to add, "yea, you taint."
We kid.
Oh stop it, it's funny.
Okay, okay; we're sorry. Here, let us correct it:
To which we'd only like to add, "yea, Senator Taint."
Happy?
Oh, by the way -- that keyboard sound you hear? Yea, that would be HRC removing our name from their press release distribution list. Though if you'd like to view the last of such tip-offs, the link's below.
SENATOR BROWNBACK'S DEROGATORY USE OF ‘FRUITS’ SINKS BELOW DECENCY [HRC Release]
God's Senator [Rolling Stone]
***UPDATE, 1/30: In an attempt to clarify his comments. Brownback has issued the following statement:
“When quoting Matthew 7:16, ‘Ye shall know them by their fruits,’ I was in no way referring to sexual orientation.
“While this biblical passage was pertinent to our overall conversation about faith and deeds, it apparently led the writer to believe I was making a joke; I was not and would never do so with such a personal and sensitive issue."
It should be noted, however, that the Rolling Stone writer does fully acknowledge Brownback was citing Mathew 7:16, but still felt that he "called gay Swedes 'fruits.'" You be the judge.
