Why are pastors opposing Chad Allen's Christian role? (hint: childhood 'Webster' appearances aren't the issue)

by Jeremy Hooper

Pastor Jason Janz of the Sharper Iron blog has sent a letter to the folks responsible for the new Christian-themed movie The End of the Spear, in which he and 100 pastors "express [their] deep disappointment" over the creative team's choice to cast openly gay actor Chad Allen in a lead role.

Thankfully, however, Janz and Co. are not requesting that Allen's image be digitally removed from all reruns of the 80's TV hit, "My Two Dads."

You can count on me,
No matter what you do.
You can count on me,
No matter where you go.

I'm standing by your side,
I'll be right behind.
No one loves you more than I do,
Put your hand in mine.

You can count on me.

Ah, memories.

In the extremely offensive article detailing his queer-unfriendly reasons for opposing Allen, Janz does, however, offer the disclaimer, "I have no more of an ax to grind with the gay community than I do with any other group that is organized against Bible principles." Which is totally cool, we have no more of a bone to pick with Janz than we do with anyone else who uses their Bible to paint us as if we are immoral heathens Hellbent on wiping society off the face of this mortal coil.

If you'd like to see how many different ways one can convey the basic sentiment, "I don't care for him because he's gay and doesn't hate himself," you can read the whole of Janz's anti-Allen article here. If you'd like to sing the "My Two Dads" theme again, we think that's a FANTASTIC idea. Ready? And a 1, and a 2....
