FOF puts gays in bed with polygamists; we're shocked there's room in polygamists' beds
In a piece pulled out of the "Polygamy/Gay: It's All the Same" playbook, Focus on the Family today jumps on the wife/wife marriage will lead to husband/wife/wife/wife/wife/wife/wife/wife marriage bandwagon. Most offensive quote award goes to the ironically named Carrie Gordon Earll (female/male/male), director of issue analysis at FOF Action, who says:
"The polygamists are going to go through the courts just like the gay-rights activists did, because that's the only way they can move their policy agenda forward," Earll said. "There is no limit to the deviancy of humanity. It could go to anything from bestiality to pedophilia to things we can't even imagine yet."
Oh, here we go. Okay -- yes, the polygamists' argument would undoubtedly share some similarities with an argument from gay rights activists, as both deal with the legislation of morality. But just as a man who beats his wife and one who's divorcing his wife can both claim "refusal to shut her trap" as a motive behind their actions and the situations still remain drastically different, the sameness in the arguments between polygamy and gay rights do not link the two issues. In fact, most religious polygamists' views on gay marriage lie much more closely with those touted by "pro-family" folks. As for the gays -- just as with heterosexuals, some gay folks support polygamy, some are open to hearing their arguments, and some are vehemently opposed. The two notions, however - apples and pomegranates.
See, Carrie, here's what we think: You guys KNOW that perhaps even more than gay marriage, polygamy strikes those in your camp as a foreign, scary threat to decency. This being the case, you guys are now trying desperately to convince folks that gay rights/ polygamy rights are one and the same. This is an especially timely tactic, as HBO's "Big Love" is getting all sorts of press. Then, once you have linked the two drastically different issues in your reader's mind, you throw in bestiality and pedophilia, creating the mental image that anything other than the one man/one woman heteronormalcy for which you folks fervently fight is bad, wrong, evil, and interchangeable. You know that many folks will not delve into the issue on a level deeper than what you feed them, so you throw the words out there in the hope that they will utilize them in their own discourse. It's duplicitous, it's short-sided, and it's CRUEL. Moreover, it's just fundamentally faulty.
Now if you'll excuse us, mom and mom and mom are calling us...
