Gays to regain right to have needles stuck in their veins?

by Jeremy Hooper

The FDA is scheduled to meet Thursday to hear arguments against/ review the reasons for their 23-year old ban on blood donation by gay men.

To which we'd like to say: Though it doesn't sound as if it's on the "Behavior-Based Blood Donor Deferrals in the Era of Nucleic Acid Testing" conference's docket for discussion, your scribe would also like to take a brief moment to tell the FDA that if they could do something about that whole "fainting thing" that he does every time he donates the red fluid, that would be great.  Though he has no problem being identified as a 'mo, he really hates looking like a big p***y in front of strangers.

Now where were we?  Oh yea...

Originally enacted due to the inability in 1983 to test the blood for HIV, the ban has long been opposed by gay activists, since the supply is now screened.  Here's hoping after Thursday's meeting and subsequent discussion, the monogamous gay man who's slept with the same one guy for 15 years will be just as free to contribute as the loose lass who's slept with 15 guys in the past one hour. Pricked fingers crossed.
