'Brokeback' yanker meets with those who made it a hit

by Jeremy Hooper

Larry Miller (pic.), the Utah theater owner who gained national attention this January when he pulled Brokeback Mountain, met with around 30 University of Utah students, faculty, and administrators yesterday. And though it's unlikely the meeting -- which was said to have featured gays and lesbians sharing stories of pain and heartbreak -- will lead Miller to march in this year's Pride parade, the Salt Lake Tribune does quote him as saying "there were some issues he was going 'home [to] think about,'" with him offering the hopeful statements:

"Now, I understand how something I said inadvertently made them feel demeaned as individuals" ... "Maybe their well-being trumps my beliefs, my rights to express myself."

Promising.

Miller was at the school because he's giving a speech today on the "Rewards of Investing in Higher Education." Here's sincerely hoping Mr. Miller will continue exploring the vast rewards that come from investing in equality and acceptance.
