ACLU goes courtin' for clubbed club

by Jeremy Hooper

Today in Atlanta, an ACLU case seeking to force Cleveland, Georgia's White County High School to allow a gay-straight club will head to court.

The ACLU will be arguing that school officials violated the Federal Equal Access Act by barring the club last year; the school will be attesting to their right to bar non-curricular clubs. We, on the other hand, will spend the day arguing whether that one guy who used to annoy us by imitating Adam Sandler during Key Club meetings circa 1996 was named Jeff or John. We want to say John, but Jeff also sounds right. Either way, he was such an ass. "I got a snake, man," he'd screech in the most exasperating of ways. Ugh, that voice reverberates in our head even now, some ten years later. Traumatizing.

White County -- don't deprive your gay/gay allies of their own pubescent nightmare. Allow the club, if not because it's the right and legal thing to do, then do it so that in ten years time, your future queer writers will have a memory on which to rely, should a writers' blocked Monday leave them with nothing to say.

Maybe his name was George...
