CCL of Maine to protest Pride; dignity, honor, and self-respect remain unpicketed
In a video piece posted on his website, the Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Heath has announced that his group will protest this Saturday's Southern Maine Pride Parade in Portland, inviting others to "stand with [them] in this noble effort." Heath says:
The Christian Civic League of Maine is mindful of the current climate of intimidation in our state, which many call 'The New McCarthyism.' Anyone who holds a religious or moral objection to homosexuality runs the risk of being stigmatized as an 'intolerant bigot.' Individuals who speak out against the homosexual agenda often lose their livelihoods. Worse, gay activists have attacked, beaten, and spat upon individuals who protest their politically-correct celebrations of 'diversity.' It is a story that the pro-homosexual media conveniently chose to ignore.
For precisely this reason, The League will protest the Southern Maine Gay Pride parade this coming Saturday
Only problem? McCarthyism involved a witch-hunt in which those suspected of being Communists or Communist sympathizers were aggressively questioned, oftentimes on the basis of shoddy evidence. A more apt comparison to our current gay rights battle would be to liken those who were scrutinized to today's gays and gay allies, with those who stand up against the modern witch hunt serving as the modern day Edward R. Murrows. For you see, Mr. Heath, if you guys weren't using shoddy facts and bias to aggressively stigmatize homosexuals, then we would have no reason or need to defend ourselves. For you to act as if we're sitting on the House Un-American Activities Committee and you on the witness stand is not only disingenuous, but also grossly unfair to Lillian Hellman, Arthur Miller, Paul Robeson, Charlie Chaplin, and any of history's other accused "Reds."
So that being said, Mr. Heath, we have only one thing to say to you and your planned protest: Good night, and good luck.
