Southern Baptist Gay tries to 'de-gay' Southern Baptists

by Jeremy Hooper

At the recent Southern Baptist Convention, a motion was reportedly presented that called on pastors to:

Stop using the word "gay" when referring to homosexuals in sermons, publications and the media.

"And so what?" you might be asking yourself. The SBC has clearly never been comfortable with the word "gay," so you're probably wondering why this is of any note. Well, reading on...

The motion, presented by retired pastor William Gay of Washington, N.C., also asked other pastors to stop referring to homosexuals as "gay" in their sermons and publications.

Fish. Barrel. Shoot:

We hear John Lesbian, Fred Bi, and Matthew Sodomy had some of their own totally non-personal concerns that they wanted the convention to address, but unfortunately Mr. Gay filled the ironic name/ironic proposal quota for this particular SBC meeting. Better luck next year, fellas.

So what happened to the Gay proposal? Well, according to the Texas Baptist Standard, Mr. Gay's motion was ultimately overturned because it was deemed "beyond the scope of the convention's authority to direct churches to use a specific vocabulary." However, we do hear that the convention suggested he change his middle name to Xavier, so that he can live much more happily and fully as an "X. Gay."
