Dean responds to NY marriage ruling; we suggest more terse, clear response

by Jeremy Hooper

In response to today's NY gay marriage decision, Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean has issued the following statement:

"As Democrats, we believe that every American has a right to equal protection under the law and to live in dignity. And we must respect the right of every family to live in dignity with equal rights, responsibilities and protections under the law. Today's decision by the New York Court of Appeals, which relies on outdated and bigoted notions about families, is deeply disappointing, but it does not end the effort to achieve this goal.

"As that essential process moves forward, it is up to the State legislature to act to protect the equal rights of every New Yorker and for the debate on how to ensure those rights to proceed without the rancor and divisiveness that too often surrounds this issue.
"

To which we respond: "Ya know what, Howard? We appreciate this, we really, really, really do. But here's the thing -- if you, Ms. Clinton, Mr. Shumer, et. al would just cut the lines and come out and say, "We support full marriage equality," you could do more for our cause overnight than many of us could do in a lifetime. You either do think we should be free to marry or you do not! But if you don't, then you're not fully supporting and respecting 'the right of every family to live in dignity with equal rights, responsibilities and protections under the law.'

"We had Mr. Schumer and Ms. Clinton both marching in our recent NYC Pride Parade, and we were glad to have them. However, neither Dem fully supports same-sex marriage, something we're not even sure many folks realize. And let's not forget your infamous misstating of the Dem party's position on marriage just two months ago, Mr. Dean. These mixed messages as to what really constitutes equality are just muddying the waters. Step up and be the party that truly supports equality UNAPOLOGETICALLY! You might be surprised by how many folks you could rally if you'd only shine a brighter beacon of light, one that promised to lead us out of the historical black mark in which we all are currently living."
