SHOCKING: Pro-gay governor stumps at place where gay voters congregate
The anti-gay folks at the Christian Civic League of Maine are today decrying Governor John Baldacci for including on his campaign website a picture of his appearance at a local Gay Pride Festival. They say:
"Incredible as it may seem, the Governor's campaign website features a photo of the Governor at the appalling Gay Pride Festival which was the subject of so much controversy back in June."
And they conclude from the image:
"The fact that the photo is featured prominently on the Governor's campaign website reveals once again that the homosexual rights lobby is by far the most powerful special interest group in Maine, and that the Governor is ready to cater to their every whim."
But here's the thing: The photo Baldacci has on his site is connected to an announcement that the Human Rights Campaign has endorsed him for governor. What does CCL want him to show to illustrate such an announcement, some of their own campaigns to rollback rights in the state? Mr. Baldacci supports gay rights -- he (hopefully) will not, cannot, and should not make one apology for that.
Moreover, the image, like all of the images on his campaign site, are simply culled from Baldacci's flickr stream. As you can see, the Pride Parade images coexist on flickr peacefully with other events where the governor's stumped:
Is the aggressive Wells High School lobby pressuring the Governor to cater to their every diploma-offering whim? Or what about these other photos:
And you know how that Jonesy's Diner lobby is -- militant, to say the least!
Baldacci is campaigning for re-election -- he goes places. For CCL to say the picture is proof "that the homosexual rights lobby is by far the most powerful special interest group in Maine," is as far-fetched as saying this "Maine is Open For Business" image shows his connection to the powerful pro-commerce agenda. We don't know what CCL was trying to prove by pointing out a benign image of Baldacci at an event they already knew he attended, but it would seem to us that "grasping at straws" must be their latest strategy in their fight to thwart equality.
