Gays on TV, '06-'07: Come back 'Will & Grace,' all is forgiven

by Jeremy Hooper

According to GLAAD, out of the 679 lead or supporting characters on scripted primetime television this season, only 9 will be gay or lesbian (1.3%). Of course if the nets hadn't passed on our pilot, "Gay G. Ay, the Gay Who Does Gay Stuff," that number would've been well into double digits. The bastards.

However, GLAAD does report that there will be an additional 5 gay characters appearing on primetime television in semi-regular recurring roles, and that in the realms of cable and reality TV, gays will continue to be more frequently and multi-dimensionally represented. Oh, and backstage of the primetime shows -- sure to be LOADS more gay folks there.
