Don't like the Jersey ruling? Then just disregard it!

by Jeremy Hooper

Good As You Images Cc Images Serve 0,,1461188,00Responding to the Jersey marriage ruling, the Family Research Council's Tony Perkins has some very novel advice for the state's legislature: he's recommending the members of the legislative branch simply IGNORE the judicial! He says in his "Washington Update" column:

"The legislature should ignore the court's ruling and follow the lead of 20 other states that have already passed amendments to protect this sacred institution. Otherwise, the legislature will become nothing more than the lackeys of an activist judiciary."

So the man whose whole career is based on doing what is "right" and taking the "moral high road" is actually recommending that the lawmakers just violate the ruling and pretend it never happened. So basically if it's a ruling with which he doesn't agree, Mr. Perkins thinks it acceptable to say, "Neh, don't think so." UNREAL!

Since Perkins and his cronies have created the illusion that "pro-fairness rulings = judicial activism" (just like they've deceived folks into believing "anti-gay = pro-family," "anti-abortion = pro-life," and "discrimination = defending traditional values"), they feel they can just crucify or even try and impeach any justices who are not duped into believing their flawed rhetoric! It's completely enraging! What if our community were to recommend that approach? Mr. Perkins would be all over us disobedient gays, calling us militant and worse! And while we certainly lash out against unfair rulings -- like the ones that were narrowly decided in Washington and New York -- we still accept that the ruling and move on to looking for whatever course of action we can take to right the wrong! But we don't just pretend it never happened!

Although we actually kind of hope the Legislature does follow at least the first part of Mr. Perkin's advice. For you see, there are many who think that if the Legislature doesn't act, then pro-gay attorneys would return to court, at which time the Court would just say, "Well, lawmakers, you had your chance to set up your own system. Now that you've forfeited -- full marriage for all!" So maybe you're actually on to something, TP! Except, of course, for the parts where you recommend that the state pass a marriage ban and say that if they don't, they "will become nothing more than the lackeys of an activist judiciary." Those are exactly the kinds of flawed, offensive statements that EVERYONE should ignore.
