'Americans For Truth': More MAAD than GLAAD
In an entry in which she criticizes actress Julianne Moore for appearing in a GLAAD PSA and condemns GLAAD for merely existing in the first place, Sonja Dalton of the so-called "Americans For Truth" says of the Moore PSA:
In the continuing quest to conflate special status for sexual perversion with civil rights for black Americans, the piece begins with a quote from Abraham Lincoln: “Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.”
Then the actress says: “I love this country. I love it for the principles it was founded upon, where every American is created equal, regardless of skin color or sexual orientation…”
It would come as quite a surprise to George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and the other God-fearing leaders of the American Revolution to learn that they had “sexual orientation” (homosexuality) in mind while drafting the Declaration of Independence, framing the Constitution and drafting the Federalist Papers.
To which we reply:
Well, Ms. Dalton, if Jefferson and Washington were surprised to learn that they had sexual orientation in mind when drafting founding documents, perhaps they could have asked THEIR SLAVES to explain it to them! And while Adams was, by most accounts, quite anti-slavery for his day, he could have instead pondered how great it was that he lived in world where women received little formal education, with their primary role to find a husband, to whom she was expected to be subservient. Then, the three men could have met up a their local watering hole, where the could have NOT discussed stem cells, immigration, abortion, minimum wage, nuclear weapons, tax reform, abortion, or any of the other ideas that their 18th century minds simply couldn;t graps.
For you see, Ms. Dalton, if societal ideals began and ended with the Founding Fathers, many of us outside of the realm of the white, heterosexual male would be in the same equality-seeking boat. Not to mention, this month's edition of Men's Vogue would feature a cover story on "How to Choose a Powdered Wig that Makes Your Silk Britches and Puffy Shirt Pop, and that's just wrong. But to them, both lily white head pieces and skin that matched were the only norm. We have evolved. Every time your side tries to throw the ideas of late 1700s residents in our face to discredit gay rights, you actually only highlight the idea that we Americans have lived through many transgressions that we've later overcome.
