Gay marriage: We piss 'em off going into it, and we piss 'em off exiting it
So you may remember last week when we briefly told you how the Rhode Island Supreme Court is being asked to decide whether or not state judges can grant gay divorces to same-sex couples who were married elsewhere. The issue is being brought to the court by a lesbian couple who were married in Massachusetts in 2004, but who now wish to dissolve their union in Rhode Island, the state where they both reside.
So pretty simple, right? A couple who was married now wishes not to be. Happens all the time in the heterosexual world, with relatively little hoop-jumping or to-do. But, of course, when the legally married couple is a same-sex one, they become automatic fodder for "pro-family" speakers looking to find yet another way to decry gay rights efforts. Here is Peter LaBarbera of the so-called "Americans For Truth" speaking to Focus on the Family's CitizenLink news:
"If you recognize same-sex divorce, you're recognizing same-sex marriage,"..."It's amazing how political the activists are."
...
"The modus operandi of the homosexual activists is to use anything possible -- even divorce -- to win approval of their lifestyle," ... "That's what the main agenda is. They are desperate for approval of their lifestyle, and even if it means recognizing gay divorce as opposed to gay marriage, they'll do that."
Ah, yes. Because clearly these ladies said to themselves: "You know what? I love you and want to be with you for the rest of my life, but it would be best for our movement if we just go ahead and divorce. Besides, just imagine how much we could piss of Peter LaBarbera!" Right? After all, we gays don't exist except to give these anti-gay rights activists their own reason to live.
[::Writer shakes heads and rolls eyes so dramatically, he fears Mr. LaBarbera will next accuse him of trying to politically push for the legal recognition of condescending reactions in order to gain approval of his "fed up with ridiculousness" lifestyle:: ]
Moreover, Mr. LaBarbera is just plain wrong when he says, "If you recognize same-sex divorce, you're recognizing same-sex marriage." The truth is that by considering the divorce, the court only needs to acknowledge that there is, in fact, a legal marriage that exists between these two women. There is, undeniably, a legal contract in place! Even if the court does allow for the dissolution of the contract, it wouldn't change one iota how the state of Rhode Island goes about dealing with the marriage-seeking efforts of their local same-sex couples. It is a separate "issue" that will need its separate efforts!
It's simply outrageous that ultra-moral folks like Mr. LaBarbera can, in good conscience, just boldly assert that this is a case gay rights activists are using "to win approval of their lifestyle." With these characters, gays can't go through any of life's motions or realities without our actual normalcy being portrayed as a political endeavor. But this is a simple case involving one couple's reality -- they are legally bound and wish to no longer be! What are they supposed to do?!? One of the ladies involved, Cassandra Oriston, even made a point to say last week (as quoted by the AP):
"It isn't a situation I would choose by any means," ..."Divorce is hard enough without the added burden of being the test case."
But unfortunately she is the test case, and these ladies will inevitably get media attention, no matter how much the involved parties may try and shy away for the spotlight. However, Mr. Labarbera and his ilk DON'T have to be even the slightest bit involved in this scenario, yet they are so desperate for approval of their raging bias against homosexuals that even if it means condemning gay divorce as opposed to gay marriage, they'll do that. THEY are the ones who have the agenda here! Instead of seizing this divorce as an opportunity to push for gay marriage, as Mr.Labarbera claims we're doing, what we really need to do is use this opportunity to point out how desperately these characters try and demonize every last aspect of our existences!
