Levin calls Brownback out on his judicial whacktivism

by Jeremy Hooper

As you might remember, uber-conservative Senator Sam Brownback has been blocking the nomination of Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Janet T. Neff to the federal bench simply because the judge attended the commitment ceremony of a lesbian friend. Brownback apparently feared that the gay cooties leapt off the loving lesbians beings and permeated Ms. Neff's brain, so he's been stalling her appointment for months.

Well, now Mr. B'back has agreed to stop blocking the confirmation under one condition -- that Ms. Neff recuses herself from every future case dealing with same-sex unions.

Say whaaa?!

Bio PictFortunately, like a spokesperson for all who have a low tolerance for offensive absurdity, fellow Senator Carl Levin (pic.) is speaking out against Brownback's outrageous conditional. He is quoted by the AP as saying in a written statement that "if Sen. Brownback made this request to Judge Neff, it would be very inappropriate," and that it would "strike at the integrity" of the process to make such a request.

Indeed.

It remains to be seen how Brownback will proceed with the Neff situation. However, we hear he's mulling a concession in which he'll allow her confirmation just as long as she only casts rulings with which he fully agrees.
