For once, we're actually okay with an evangelical supporting 'Inequality'
Think all evangelicals are against our right to marriage equality? Well, consider heterosexual evangelical Christian Freddie Oakley, an elections clerk in Yolo County, CA, who will protest this nation's gay marriage bans by issuing a special "Certificate of Inequality" to the same-sex couples who come to request a marriage license from her this Valentine's Day (the day when gay couples nationwide protest anti-marriage laws by seeking marriage certificates). Oakley's novel certificate reportedly reads:
“Whereas: The state of California arrogates the right to limit your freedom to marry based on the gender of your chosen spouse, and
“Whereas: Based on your choice of spouse I may NOT issue a license to marry to you, and
“Whereas: I am unable to divine any legitimate governmental purpose in the regulation of your marriage partner’s gender,
“Now, therefore: I issue this Certificate of Inequality to you because your choice of marriage partner displeases some people whose displeasure is, apparently, more important than principles of equality.
“Issued to: (a name here) and signed, this day, February 14, 2007
Freddie Oakley, Yolo County Clerk-Recorder.”
Refreshing.
Now of course the certificate is non-binding and holds no sort of legal power. However, the action speaks volumes! It is exactly the kind of support we need from our straight, religious allies if we ever want to see a Valentine's Day where our morning's are spent with our love, and not outside of a city building in the freezing cold protesting the lack of respect that the American government continues to show for our love. So thank you, Ms. Oakley, for helping our chances of someday dedicating our Feb. 14 efforts only to "cards, hearts, and cupid," not "prohibitions that are stupid."
