'That's so gay' rights debated in Cali court

by Jeremy Hooper

Kathy and Elden Rice, a conservative couple who have been known to oppose gay acceptance in public schools as part of their work with the Eagle Forum, are suing the school district of Santa Rosa, CA, claiming their daughter was disciplined for, among other things, using the phrase "that's so gay."

Now, this case raises all sorts of questions regarding this popular way that American teens convey that they think something is "lame" or "stupid." Such as: Is the phrase offensive to gay folks? Is it benign slang? If you say something is "so bi," does that mean it's somewhere between lame and cool?

The mind boggles.

No matter the merits, the Rices claim their daughter was punished more severely for the comment and treated differently on other issues because their own beliefs are just "so anti-gay" (and we don't mean anti-lame). We'll have to wait and see who the judge finds to be "so guilty."
