Ideas that will endure: From 'sin it aint' to cinema
Agreeing with Sen. Val Stevens' comments that a domestic partnership bill that's likely to become law in Washington state will "[change] society in ways that will ultimately harm it," Sonja Swiatkiewicz, director of issue response for Focus on the Family Action, says:
"We've seen 27 states vote overwhelmingly to constitutionally protect marriage," ... "It's clear the people support one-man, one-women [sic] marriage.
"Though Washington has a Defense of Marriage statute, it's clear that marriage will remain vulnerable in the Evergreen State until the people have the chance to preserve traditional marriage at the ballot box."
In response, we say:
"Despite its ultra-low 16% rating at Rotten Tomatoes, we saw Wild Hogs overwhelmingly take the top spot at the weekend box office. It grossed over $25 million more than Zodiac (which has 86% at RT) and almost 30 million more than Bridge to Terabithia (84%). It's clear that as a collective, we Americans do not always vault the most worthy concepts to the point of popularity.
However, neither Wild Hogs or marriage inequality will hold up over time. What beautiful concepts do we remember when looking back at the 60s? The march towards racial equality and The Graduate, not segregation and The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies! By 2040, it won't be cheesy popcorn flicks or mean-spirited bias that are looked back upon with pride. It will be both gay cowboys and a film starring the man who once played one that will be accepted as worthy.
The Washington domestic partnership measure is expected to be taken up by the House this week. Here's hoping its future is more Lawrence of Arabia, less Clambake.

Your thoughts
"Women" instead of "woman". A freudian slip? ;)
