NJ gays largely waiting to sit in front part of bus

by Jeremy Hooper

Jerseyequal-1Numbers released today indicate that only around 229 gay and lesbian couples have filed for civil unions in New Jersey since the practice became legal on Feb. 19.

Shocking fashion analysts everywhere, who had predicted that legally declared second-class citizenship, highlighted with less-than-equal undertones was gonna be totally in this winter.

Oh well, shows what they know. Here's just hoping that by Spring of '08, full equality paired with matching rights will be a hot trend that we gays are far more willing to get behind.

No Rush to Get Civil Unions in New Jersey

Your thoughts

Hey, love your site and have been reading for a while now. However this is my first time to comment.

My partner and I registered for a civil union and, while I agree with what you wrote, we did so to get what little protections from the state that we could. Does that mean that I will not keep fighting for full equality? Absolutely not.

Also the numbers the Times and other publications are quoting seem to be too low. I know I saw many, many gay couples filing during the four times I was at city hall in Jersey City. Perhaps it is JCs proximity to NYC and there is a higher concentration of gays. Who knows?

Anyway, keep up the good work.

Hey there. I do not at all mean to discredit one's willingness to get a civil union. Of course you should take advantage of all of the rights you can.
