'Pro-fams' try to break the 'Silence'

by Jeremy Hooper

Picture 41 Good As You Images Docs Harvey-2Irene Bennett (pic, l), understanding wife of professional "ex-gay" Stephen Bennett, and Linda Harvey (pic, r.), head of Mission: America, are just two of the folks spearheading a new "pro-family" coalition called NotOurKids.com. This new group's sole mission? To request that parents keep their children home from school on April 18, so as to avoid participation in the pro-tolerance Day of Silence event.

We kid you not. The Concerned Women for America, Mission: America, Americans For Truth, Mass Resistance, Culture Campaign, Illinois Family Institute, and Stephen Bennett Ministries are joining gay-demonizing forces to "object to the disruptive political hijacking of America's classrooms by pro-homosexual advocates" and "educate parents, teachers and America about the deceptive agenda behind GLSEN's Day of Silence." So basically, our community's most ardent foes are ganging up to ensure that the next generation will carry their equality-torching torch. Those kids who are most likely in need of hearing an opposing viewpoint will be told to just stick their fingers in their ears, close their eyes to the world around them, and chant Leviticus 18:22.

Unsettling.

We, as gays who know how scary high school can feel when you are gay or closeted, are big supporters of The Day of Silence, so we encourage all parents and kids to check out the website below and find out what they day is truly all about:

Some youngsters may be encouraged by their parents to shun those who they don't understand; but "not our kids!"

Your thoughts

You know. Its these type of things that just bug me so much. Its a simple day of silence and its trying to establish acceptance and tolerance of other people. The fact that someone jumps the gun with the wrong idea like Irene Bennett and is trying to get parents to keep their children home for that day. I hope people realize this "keeping your children home for one day so they can't learn to understand that people are different" is a waste of time.

Equality for all people!

I guess the parents assume their kids can't be trusted even one day to keep their homophobic mouths shut.

Hmm...maybe they should just name it "Bigots Play Hooky Day" instead of the Not Our Kids nonsense. Of course they are relentless, but notice how the duet of discriminatng divas handles the scene? They beg the parents to keep the kids home rather than ask the kids what they think of the event.

One wonders how many bribes the "christianistas" offer their teens in order to follow in the proper footpath of hatred and bigotry. Shoot, I'll bet it's worth at least money for that special new dress or at least a little extra in the envelope for the white baby jesus come Sunday.
