Colson once again 'Chucks' with truth
Watergate figure Chuck Colson is up to his old anti-gay tricks again, writing a new piece in which he decries attempts to "normalize homosexuality" in public schools. His focus is on the school district of Montgomery County, MD, where gay-accepting sex-ed curriculum has been a contentious "issue" for the past few years. Of that curriculum -- which has now been implemented in local schools -- Colson says the following:
Some of the lessons are downright dangerous. For example, kids are encouraged to identify their sexual orientation early. But doing so is linked to increased rates of suicide among adolescents, according to some psychologists.
Worst of all, there is no mention whatsoever of the many health hazards associated with the gay lifestyle. A Montgomery County parent group, called Citizens for a Responsible Curriculum, includes an infectious disease specialist, Dr. Ruth Jacobs. Dr. Jacobs put forward a petition signed by 270 doctors asking Montgomery County to warn kids of the health dangers related to homosexuality. Montgomery County ignored it.
This is what we end up with when we have a “health” curriculum developed, not by medical experts, but with the help of determined homosexual activists.
Okay, so first off -- we just love the reference to "some psychologists" in regards to the linkage between teen suicide and coming out of the closet. No attempt to even quote the "pro-family" movement's stable of flawed studies and biased researchers, probably because most every bit of that research has now been refuted within an inch of its life. Instead, they are now just using the abstract "some psychologists" to back up theories convenient to their cause. It's especially enraging in this case, considering you don't have to be a rocket scientist to see that the TRUE thing that could lead a gay kid to commit suicide is non-acceptance and fear, the likes of which is propagated by homophobia, not an early closet exodus!
But now we must move on the truly duplicitous enchilada of the above quoted text: The claim that a factual petition with wide support from the medical community was presented to the Montgomery County school board, yet ultimately rejected. For you see, there are (at least) two things that Mr. Colson neglects to tell you about that petition:
(1) All of the signatures came from one place, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, where Dr. Jacobs is employed. And as TeachTheFacts.org shows us here, some of the doctors seemed to have had no clue as to what they were actually signing, and at least one wrote to the Montgomery Co. Board of Education to retract his signature.
(2) The petition incorrectly asserts that the Surgeon General has issued a warning against anal sex. However, as TeachtheFacts.org again shows, the petition neglected to say that the Surgeon General to which they were referring was C. Everett Koop, who issued the statement in the mid '80s during the height of the AIDS crisis. However, Jacobs and company were trying to make it sound like this was a current government statement, not a twenty year old attempt to curb a disease that was new and not fully understood.
But those who are encouraging that kids be educated about the reality of sex are the activists trying to sway medical truth?! No, Mr. Colson -- it would seem to us like those who are trying to muddy the waters of medical thought are the ones who are determined to unfairly shape this debate!

Would that be the same Shady Grove Adventist that nearly shut down a couple of years ago because the nurses employed there were so worried about the quality of care being provided? Wonder how Dr. Jacobs fared in the resulting investigation?

Please remember that Chuck Colson is a CONVICTED FELON. He served time in prison, and paid a fine for his illegal actions in connection with the Watergate break-in and subsequent cover-up. That means he is a liar and a political opportunist of the lowest order.
Your article mentions him as a "Watergate figure". This tells a younger audience nothing. It would be beneficial to let your readers know what type of person he really is.
