Eh, make your own 'I
Huckabees' joke
In the latest issue of Time magazine, GOP presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee answers the question of whether or not he believes homosexuality to be immoral. His answer:
That's their business. I may not agree with it and, in fact, don't agree with it. But I respect that they have the right to do it. When they want to change the rules, though, of institutions like marriage, I feel I have a responsibility to speak out. The rules are one man, one woman for life.
Translation from "conservative nominee speak" to plain English:
Yes, I do personally think its immoral; but I don't have a problem with it as long as they do it in private. However, when they have such radical ideas like wanting to pledge monogamy, serve in the army, or to be treated just as equally as their heterosexual tax-paying peers, then that's where I draw the line.
Oh, and in case you didn't get the memo -- my personal views on morality are the "rules" by which everyone should abide. After all, I am running for President of Conservative Christianland, yes?
Don't f***ing patronize us, Mike. The only "rules" we want to change are the ones that deem it acceptable for folks to use one-sided religious views to demean and deny rights to a large, vibrant sect of the population. We respect that you have the right to think what you want and speak your convictions. However, when you try and foist those interpretations of Leviticus and Romans I onto how this government handles civil liberties and institutions -- we feel we have a responsibility to speak out!
