Donnelly rationalizes irrational vote

by Jeremy Hooper

Picture 2-72Bilerico has given a forum to Indiana Congressman Joe Donnelly, one of the only fourteen Dem. Reps. who recently voted against H.R. 1592. Donnelly is attempting to explain his vote against the gay-inclusive hate crimes protections:

In our opinion, it is a completely weak, baseless response (with Donnelly taking the "all hate is hate" cop-out). But if anything, Rep. Donnelly does highlight just how important it is for those of us who back such legislation to call our reps and voice our support, as he says he "received nearly five times as many calls, emails and letters from opponents of the bill as [he] did from its supporters." We know how coordinated the social conservatives are in rallying their peeps; we must do the same!

Your thoughts

Thanks for the link, Jeremy. I hope your readers will take the time to comment on Joe Donnelly's post to express their frustrations with his vote (politely, of course!). The Congressman has said he'd be checking in a few times to read comments and respond.

He got very few e-mails in support of the legislation from the district. Let's show him that he's on a national stage and that the bill affects those of us outside his conservative district too by giving him a lot of comments to read and think about.

After all, if Bush vetoes this, we may need his vote! And he IS swayable...
