Georgia peanut farmer to Congress: Do ask!
One of the two Democratic presidents to hold office in recent memory has called on Congress to revisit a ban that was initiated by the other. Yes, in a letter to the the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), former president Jimmy Carter has asked lawmakers to take another look at the Clinton-initiated "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ban and consider its human rights implications.
For example: They might want to consider the idea that it violates that one human right known as sheer decency. Or that other human right known as equality. Freedom, for a third. Call us nutty, but that's a trio of rights we dearly value!
A full pdf of Carter's exclusive letter to SLDN can be downloaded here. But if you're a member of Congress, we'll just save you the time: The letter says if you don't repeal the ban, you'll actually be required to show up for every vote, debate, and hearing for the rest of your time in politics. So you better listen to the former prez and go work on making a repeal happen. If not for the sake of what's right, then do it for those long four five six day weekends on Martha's Vineyard that we know you hold so dear.
