A show about consonants, not 'L's
AfterEllen's Sarah Warn has brought to light the following ad, which Showtime placed in yesterday's edition of Daily Variety:
"No longer 'a show about lesbians,' this series has evolved into a show about people"? That is the tag line they are using to increase the show's chances of Emmy nomination?!? Uhm...
Now, we of course grasp the meaning of the quote (the show is universal and for everyone, not just Sapphic ladies). In fact, the full quote from the Tribune actually reads:
"No longer a 'show about lesbians,' this series has evolved into a show about people, many of whom happen to be lesbians, which is as it should be"
That makes much more sense! In it's truncated form, however, it leaves plenty of room for misinterpretation. Had they used the full quote, or had their shortened version said something like "No longer JUST 'a show about lesbians'," it would be a different case. But instead, the network, in an attempt to put its best foot forward for the Emmy voters, has put out a confusing campaign that sort of makes it sound as if lesbians are outside of the realm of other "Earthlings."
Perhaps not the shrewdest move, Showtime!
