MI: Vote to ban marriage, and we'll throw in a DP benefits bar at no extra cost!

by Jeremy Hooper

Picture 5-57Because of Michigan's 2004 voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage (and a Court of Appeals decision that extended the ban to DP benefits), the city of Kalamazoo has announced that it will no longer extend health insurance benefits to the partners of gay workers:

Kalamazoo Cancels Same-Sex Benefits [AP via WILX]

So take that, committed couples of many years who were benefiting from that society-wrecking agenda known as nicer, cheaper healthcare. For your fellow citizens not only voted to keep you from corrupting the world with a ring and an "I do"; they've also made it harder for you to corrupt the world with your clean bill of health!

Ugh. Just ugh.

The City of Kalamazoo is the state's first public employer to act on this, with other public employers waiting for the state Supreme Court to hear an appeal of the case before removing the benefits. But stock up on your antibiotics now, those Michigan gays who benefit from your publicly-employed partner's DP benefits. After all, should this whole thing stick, it will be only a short while before you too are valued in ways lesser than your heterosexual counterparts (regardless of how long or real your love and commitment)!

You know, we don't hate much around here. But gay marriage bans: We unapologetically HATE them with a capital "F-U"!

Your thoughts

Good afternoon!

I would love to comment on this post and others, as well as interact with the operator and readers of this blog, but unfortunately I have had awful experiences as of late. For instance, on the blog Holy Bullies and Headless Monsters, operator Alvin McEwan has in my view used the comment moderation tool in an unreasonable, biased, seemingly arbitrary, contradictory, intellectually dishonest, and (I would argue) overall cowardly way. So I am testing the waters of blog’s that I read and would like to comment on in order to see if the type of irrational control measures and censorship I have experienced is common. If and when time allows please inform me of the standards you employ relating to comment moderation.

Thanks!

AJ: In the six months or so that G-A-Y has had comments, here has been exactly one (outside of comment spam) disapproved. The sole reason: The entire post involved the writer using the term "C*NT" approximately 500 times.

So go ahead, my friend -- We welcome disagreement.

Great (and refreshing) to hear. God bless!

Hey Jeremy.......

As a side note, related to this post, because of this vote that just took place in Kalamazoo and it's sad unfortunate result, the City of Ann Arbor, which has been known as being one of the most gay friendly cities in Michigan is soon voting to do the same thing for it's city workers. According to NPR, it seems like Domestic Partners in this city will also soon lose their benefits.

I would like to apologize for my city's stupidity.

I'm going to go ahead and apologize for my State's stupidity. I value my gay and lesbian friends and hate to see this mean-spirited crap directed at them.

And I would be shocked speechless if our Supremes reverse the C of A.

to clarify matters, aj did not disagree. he wrote a long diatribe that had nothing to do with the post. and then he gets angry because the blog moderator will not post it.
