Video: Dems gay support becoming less camoflauged?

by Jeremy Hooper

The large field of Democratic presidential candidates debated last night in New Hampshire, wherein the subject of gays in the military was addressed. Here is how Clinton and Biden verbally addressed the matter, as well as a final "show of hands," where all of the hopefuls expressed a desire to overturn DADT:

Okay, so it looks like they are all getting behind us in terms of our freedom to serve openly. Fantastic! Now if only they could boldly show some support for our freedom to love and marry (not just war and fight), we might actually find our slightly-better-than complacent attitude about this crew of White House would-bes turn into full-blown optimism! Wouldn't that be fun?

We'll keep our fingers crossed that a bold civil rights hero will emerge from this pack over the next year and a half. Someone that will stand with us on all matters of civil liberty and equality. Someone who will protest any attempts to legislate morality, as well as work to de-muddify the waters between "civil" and "religious" marriage (and not further entangle the two, Mr. Obama). Someone who will take principled stands for decency, as they realize that what this country truly needs is someone who will cut the bullsh*t and stop playing so many political games. Someone who will pronounce simple words correctly at last 90% of the time. Someone who will restore the vigor of a nation that has been truly weakened by an almost unbelievably polarizing, flawed, divisive, ineffective administration. Someone who will help us conquer the issues that plague the LGBT population, so that we stop having to fight for basic human rights, and start focusing our vast brainpower and resources on actual social issues.

We're waiting, kids. Which one of you is going to be that breath of fresh air who, in the 2050 documentary titled 21st Century America: The First 50 Years, will be the subject that's greeted with the upbeat, happy music that shifts the film from its dark, downtrodden, sullen first hour of war, discrimination, and depression?

Your thoughts

I think this is a good sign. It's funny, I say down with three straight marines at Mcsorley's during Fleet Week last week. And one of the first things I asked them was "would it bother you guys if gays served openly?" and they all looked at each other and without any hesitation said "no? why? I think a couple back at the ship are anyway (joking), as long as conduct rules aren't broken we don't give a shit". People who serve, marines, navymen and women, army, etc, they all realize the bigger picture. And eventually I think the government will too.
