In a new interview with the BBC's Radio 4, "I Will Survive" singer Gloria Gaynor said of her status as a gay icon:
"I feel good about it because I feel it is a platform for my purpose, which is to bring the love of Christ to all of my fans."
...
"I want to lead them to Christ and what he has for them. I want to lead them to him, I want to lead them to truth."
Words to which gay Jews, gay atheists, already devoutly Christian gays, and queer practitioners of every other non-Christ-based religion replied:
"Wow -- that's presumptuous of you, Ms. Gaynor. Who knew that singing the world's most popular karaoke staple gave one insight into the spiritual beliefs of millions?! We knew there were lots of interesting characters at Studio 54, but we had no clue Jesus was there partying with you and Halston, filling your ear with the knowledge that (a) gays must find themselves to him, and they need a disco diva's assistance to do so, and (b) Liza shouldn't ever wear that dress again All this time I thought you were merely an authority on the best song to be played post-breakup! It's quite interesting to learn that you are also an all-knowing authority on morality.
You know, I have a few questions about Heaven. Should I ask you, or maybe Alecia Bridges, Thelma Houston, or the members of Chic have that knowledge?"

**It should be noted that Ms. Gaynor refused to say whether she personally feels homosexuality is immoral. However, we are both afraid and petrified that she feels gays could never live with Jesus by their side. We plan to spend the day thinking about whether she did us wrong, and we'll grow strong, learning if we'll be able to get along. And we're sure her management will get back from outer space (or LA, same difference), and see gays sitting here with a sad look upon our face. They'll surely want to put this under lock, as gay fans are her key, and they won't for even one second want this situation to bother me (or any gay). So we won't yet go on now go and push Gloria out the door or tell her to "just turn around now, 'cause you're not welcome anymore!" She may not be trying to hurt us or say it's not "good to be bi," she may not want us to crumble or lay down and die. Oh no, not Gloria. She may want us to surive (as gays). As long as we know how to love (which we do), that may be something with which she can jive. We've all got our lives to live and we've all got our loves to give -- maybe we can all survive. Maybe she wants us to survive, gay-gay!
