Gays GLAAD to be deemed nominatable
As you might have heard by now, the folks at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation will for the first time allow LGBT media outlets to submit themselves for consideration for a 2008 GLAAD Media Award. This changes its previous policy, which only allowed for pro-gay stories in mainstream media outlets to earn recognition:
New Eligibility Rules Announced [GLAAD]
::sigh:: A gay rights group finally acknowledging the pro-gay work of actual gay outlets. Can't you just smell the sweet aroma of progress? Why this is even more inspiring than when "The L Word" bravely dared to cast a few lesbians, or when Out began putting some actual gays on its covers! Harvey Milk would be proud.
And what next, is the International Choir Association finally gonna start noticing those who preach to them? The Birds of a Feather Alliance gonna give some respect to the ones that flock together? Seriously -- what sort of amazing possibilities have been opened up by this whole new world of community member acknowledgment?! Is the Let's All Get On The Same Page Society finally gonna give recognition to those who are already there? The mind just reels with possibility!!!
::Writer starts annoying even himself, and therefore decides to end his cynical bout of faux excitement::
In all seriousness: Good move, GLAAD! Just let us know when and where to accept our prize.

**UPDATE, 8/15: This correction just came to us from a GLAAD staffer:
This is not the first time the GLAAD Media Awards has been open to LGBT media submissions. In the 1990s, the GLAAD Media Awards had specific LGBT media categories. Due to a lack of submissions and a tension arising from the LGBT media that did not want to be judged and evaluated by GLAAD, the categories were eliminated in 2000. Many in the media and blogosphere have chosen to not report this even though it’s in our press release to which nearly everyone is linking.
Our mistake.
