Gov. O'Malley: Closeted fan of equality?

by Jeremy Hooper

Picture 9-50Despite his public backing of civil unions and the gay marriage-unfriendly remarks he made following this week's Court of Appeals ruling, does Maryland's Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) support same-sex nuptials in private? Well, The Blade has published some personal email exchanges between O'Malley and a constituent that suggest he just might:

O’Malley backed gay marriage in private e-mails [Blade]
O'Malley betrays gays [Blade]

What's truly sad? That the idea that there would be a disconnect between a politician's personal feelings and his public pronouncements is not even the least bit shocking to us. After all, speaking from the heart is as dead of a concept in American politics as talent is as dead of a reason why one becomes famous in this country.
