Ironically named church faces queer brouhaha

by Jeremy Hooper

A Baptist church in Forth Worth,TX, that allows gays to be part of their congregations is now facing a controversy over whether or not they should allow the gay couples in their midst to be pictured together in their church directory. The name of the church in question, you ask? Well, it's -- wait for it, wait for it -- BROADWAY Baptist.

Yes, that's right -- a church that shares its name with the most gay-populated form of entertainment in the history of the world is now dealing with to what level, exactly, they will allow queer people to have a presence amongst their flock. Some think they should be in the directory; others think they shouldn't; and still others think they should do as other Baptist churches do and put the church on lockdown whenever a gay person gets within two feet of the building. Read all the deets over at Baptist Press:

And be sure to keep an eye out for for upcoming stories, when we hear the gay controversies of Circuit Party Methodist, Lesbyterian Presbysterian, and St. Harvey Milk Cathedral will provide us with further material.

Your thoughts

One thing that is conspicously absent in the BP story is just who, among Broadway's congregation, is gay. Van Cliburn, the famed pianist, is a member and a huge donor to the church. I imagine if it were not for Cliburn, Broadway might not be as tolerant towards the 'mos in their midst

Interesting. It almost seems to me that this is demonstrating that this church's inclusiveness only works as long as "no one talks about it." While I give them credit for not being entirely hostile to gay members, I'm not convinced the current arrangement is entirely honest or healthy.
