Painful headline of the day: Repent America dealt a win
When things like hate crimes protections are overturned by anyone we tend to get pissed. However, when such are overturned because of campaigns waged by a radical group that does things like blame gays for Hurricane Katrina and routinely misrepresent the facts regarding their past arrests, we pretty much want to give up.
What are we talking about, you ask? Well, ruling in a case that was brought about by the extremist Repent America organization, a state court today through out language that was enacted in 2002 to expand Pennsylvania's hate crimes law to include sexual orientation, gender identity, and physical disabilities protections. Essentially the protections were overturned solely because of the way the legislature was able to pass them, not on their merits. Which is of course the only way the stop-at-nothing bullies at Repent America could ever win such a case, as virtually anyone who operates from a place of reason sees how these sorts of protections are both constitutional and necessary. But now, because of Repent America's unneeded challenge to a widely-supported concept (according to a May '07 Gallup poll, 68% of all Americans support such protections), people are going to have to jump through unnecessary hoops and waste recourses to get Pennsylvania back to the progressive place where is already was.
Ugh. Just knowing that the Repent America kids are somewhere patting themselves on the back is enough make us want to physically repent of our lunch.
