AFA still putting 'homosexuals' in AP writers' mouths

by Jeremy Hooper

If for no other reason than archival purposes, we think it's important to note that the American Family Association's One News Now site is still changing the word "gay" to "homosexual" whenever they run an AP wire story (a practice that goes against the AP's stylebook):

AFA's take on AP story: http://www.onenewsnow.com/Culture/Default.aspx?id=68249

AP wire via Google: http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5gLnd9sDLh6QbmYq2shLxVKG_XqiwD8V0TE4G0

We have no further comment on this matter at this time. Though should the AFA feel a need to quote us on this subject, we're sure they'll feel free to attribute to us any words that most conveniently fit their political agenda.

Your thoughts

I like how they omitted 'HIV/AIDS group' from the title, so instead of the sense that the money goes to help people with an illness, you get the idea that a group of gays just won a shitload of money. Lovely. (And since when is HIV/AIDS not affecting straight people as well?) I have no idea, but are there any legal implications to changing the words of an article, yet publishing it with the original author's name, and making no note of the changes? If I was the original author, I'd be pretty upset. And in regards to one of the comments on the article, any 'disorders' (such as depression) more prominent in gays is attributed to how society treats them, which is why all the major psychological associations haven't listed homosexuality as a disorder in decades.

Actually, anonymous, the headline is less troubling, because it's common practice for those to vary slightly by new outlet.

But yes, there are LOADS of issues about changing the body text. For one, the word 'homosexual" goes against the Ap stylebook. For another, it is highly unethical to credit someone with writing a piece, yet making such a drastic change from what they really said. Especially when this change has such big implications of a social level.

The AP is aware of the matter and is supposedly dealing with it.
