Yo Ken: You started this, buddy!

by Jeremy Hooper

Picture 5-111Pastor Ken Hutcherson, the Washington pastor who has turned bullying gays into a cottage industry, is continuing his threats toward Mount Si. High School. Amidst claims that his daughter has been harassed since the controversy over his being chosen to give a Martin Luther King Day speech erupted, Hutcherson is now warning the school system:

"you are going to have to pay and pay dearly for your decisions in putting my daughter through the amount of stress that you have put her through in the last three weeks."

Bully, bully, bully. That's the only mentality in which Hutch traffics. And it is the exact same mindset that has led him to his current place of controversy, as it is his obstinate inability to accept gay people as human beings worthy of an equal place at the table that has earned him ire within the gay ranks.

Look, none of us want to see his daughter harassed. In fact, we don't even want to see Hutcherson harassed. But it is a complete intellectual bastardization for the reverend to act as if he's in a place of defense against pro-gay strong-arming, rather than a place of offense against all things queer. The truth of the matter is that he threw the stones, he threatened a company for being too gay-friendly, he joined an virulently anti-gay group, he went on national press outlets and condemned our lives and loves. All we did was say that we refuse to give in to his intimidation! And on that same token, we refuse to sit back and let him make it sound as if he's having to defend himself against the angry, militant gays, when if it were not for the anti-gay crusade that he has waged for the past few years, none of us would even know the man's name!

Your thoughts

It is his own mouth that is our best ally. Those of us in Seattle know him and his stances all too well; and the good news is that the general public by and large does too. His threat against MS was largely laughed off as bluster, but this one is likely to be taken more seriously, and not in a good way for Ken Hutcherson.
