Because it's a bit irresponsible, that's why
We've received several emails asking why we have not mentioned the possibility that Sally Kern might have a gay child. So why have we not mentioned the chatter? Well:
-For one, if she does have a gay child, the child is not the story here. The progeny have done nothing wrong to put their lives under scrutiny (at least not pertaining to Sally horrible rant).
-Also, the whole notion is based on rumor and conjecture. It's also been flatly denied by some. But true or untrue, it's more than a little unfair to bring a kid's whole life before public scrutiny simply because the mother made homophobic comments.
-Sally f**ked up. Badly. We need to loudly and unapologetically condemn her words and hold her feet to the fire. Digging into outside matters of speculation, regardless of the insight they could shed on the matter, could lead to some serious egg on the face of pro-gays.
So if people want to speculate, they have every right. But as for us, we'd rather keep the discussion on an elected official who is filling the world with lies and hate, not the potential gay offspring whose role as Sally Kern's child would likely have caused them enough mental anguish already.
Your thoughts
Smart thoughts...though if it was true it certainly would be an interesting background to the story, just like Mary Cheney was. Good idea to wait I think.

Andrew: Yea, I mean the story itself is intriguing. Admittedly. But the difference is that Mary Cheney was certifiably out and working to get her dad elected, so gay activists just picked up on that and said, "Hey, wait a minute!" But in this matter, we don't have any sort of certainty, nor do we know if the alleged child is in any way supportive of his mother. We know little.
If he is gay and wants to come out like Maya Keyes and publicly speak out against his mother, then the game completely changes. But for now, I just think any detective work should be behind the scenes.

Bravo. You're right on this one. If there is a gay child, maybe he or she will take care of things and come out and denounce his or her mother.
Of course, I sort of hope there isn't a gay child. Being a gay child with that beast for a mother would certainly be a horrible situation.

No, sorry disagree here. As a clinician, we know it is very important to attempt to understand why an individual 'goes off the deep end.' when it seems so out of context. Determining the possible etiology of disease is important, even psychological disease.
There is no other way to devise a path to healing.

Sorry, addendum. Remember this whole family and most probably this whole poitical distrcit and the state of Okalhoma deserve, to have this resolved. Look at the pain she has given TUCKER and all survivors of the Oklahoma bombing in l995.

LMendoza: Nobody's denying that it would provide interesting insight. The issue, however, is ethics.
My mother doesn't accept my homosexuality. I, of course, am a happy gay activist. If my mother gained public office and made news in a similar way as Kern, I wouldn't want members of my own "team" publicly using rumor and conjecture to piece together my truth.
But these "outing" situations aren't cut and dry. Each one is unique, and everyone has their own ideas. I'm just saying that for this particular one, I don't feel comfortable at this point.

Really to take attention away from Kern's remark for some salacious gossip about her son (and salacious gossip is what it's coming across as)would be frivilous.
So I totally agree with you my friend

Good For You!
If I want gossip I go to Perez.

Again, as this applies to all who do it, eg Hutcherson, Kern, Barber etc. Spouting PRIVATE PARANOIA in a Public forum to attempt to elicit intolerance and violence (which has already occurred in Oklahoma, if you read Tucker's letter to her.) is exactly what Hitler got away with in Europe, and his was USED by the militarists to gain power and begin WWII. The KKK used it for years.
I am simply saying it needs to be exposed for what it is..and frankly it is in her best interest to seek help. and are you not the least bit concerned for the longterm and continuing damage this is doing to the 'son she no longer has, as of March 4.'? ?Written off in her PUBLIC biography!! This is sickness, disease. Being GLBT is not.

LMendoza: Again, the point is the ethics behind the way the alleged gay child's story is unfolding. It is all based on rumor, innuendo, and things like court documents and Myspace pages that may or may not belong to him. It's about the public digging into his private life.
Nobody is denying that Kern's behavior is reprehensible. And nobody is denying that the element of a gay son would shed insight into the story (as it has with so many other conservatives). It's about the way we, as an organized movement, go about this.

Good for you, Jeremy. The possible hypocrisy is what interested me in this rumor, not whether this young man was really gay or not. Yet you don't give good reasons for pause and focusing on the real story here. Thanks.

Thanks John. And I'm assuming you meant to say "do" not "don't" in your last line, yes?

Oops. Yeah... ;-)
