Lafferty: 'Pro-life' & 'pro-family' as long as both meet her standards

by Jeremy Hooper

Thomas BeatieHave you heard about Thomas Beatie, the Bend, OR, transman whose pregnancy is getting lots of media attention? Yea, well, unfortunately not all of that attention is favorable. In fact, some of it, like the following reaction from the Traditional Values Coalition's Andrea Lafferty, is downright nasty:

This tragic situation will cause serious emotional damage to the unborn child who will be reared in this bizarre home,” ... “This she-male woman and her ‘wife’ are obviously selfish and care only about their own needs – not the need of this unborn baby to be brought up in a stable home with a real mother and a real father. They are obviously challenging social norms and are deliberately undermining what a genuine family should be.

“In this strange home, not only will ‘Heather have two mommies,’ but she’ll have a daddy who is really a mommy. What kind of childhood will this unborn baby experience? The psychological damage will take years to overcome.

...
Transgender activists are attempting to overhaul our laws dealing with family structure, restroom facilities, privacy laws, and gender. The objective is to deconstruct what it means to be male or female and to punish anyone who challenges the transgender agenda as bigoted and ignorant

Geez, Andrea. A rattle or a bib or something would have been a fine gift. You don't have to instead shower this expecting couple with condemnations of their "bizarre home" and the horrible future that you predict is in store for all involved! Honestly -- some people just DO NOT understand proper baby gift-giving etiquette!

It's unclear what Andrea will offer the couple once the baby is born. Though we do hear that this "Welcome to the World" banner has been seen lying around TVC's headquarters

Because "It's a [boy/girl]" would just be too nice!

Your thoughts

I honestly don't get how they think this would help anyone. They are simply adding extra obstacles for the baby. Is this how they live the Biblical injunction to "defend the fatherless"? To pile on?

I'd speculate on her childhood with Lou Sheldon as her dad and the damage that might have caused, but I'm nicer than that.

By the way, blogrolled you! :-)

Her name calling ('she-male') tells volumes about what's really in her heart. She's a frightened, bitter woman who knows her side is losing the cultural argument. Hearing that tone in her writing is actually somewhat heartening. It means they're beaten and they know it.

Imagine the profound damage to a child resulting from having Andrea Lafferty for a mother and Lou Sheldon for a grandfather. Now that's a "tragic situation." Far more so than Thomas Beatie's physical/biological characteristics.

The only reason this situation might cause the child psychological damage is because Andrea Lafferty will be sure that the child is not allowed to believe that his/her family is equal to other families. Andrea and co. are determined to ensure that derogatory attitudes and legal obstacles will persist against this family.

Andrea - don't you think if you and your kind just left them alone, the kid would be fine?
