Far-right interrupts our dinner by trying to interrupt our ceremonies

by Jeremy Hooper

Last night, while this writer and his partner were joyously discussing our impending nuptials over a glass of Pinot and a pile of Rigatoni, this notice hit my iPhone:

Picture 29-6

"What the hell is this?" I asked myself while popping an Alfredo-coated noodle in my mouth. "What's going on now?" my "husband" who wants to be my husband (no quotes) asked. "Would you like more bread?" our determined-to-carb-us-up server inquired.

So what was the answer? Well, we took another basket, but we didn't actually eat any more of it because we were already too full from the pizza and pasta, and because wanted to save room for the dessert we were planning to have after the show we were seeing. We felt bad for wasting the bread, but we simply couldn't eat any more.

Oh wait, it's the email notification that you want to know about? Oh, well it turns out that folks from such anti-gay outfits as the Proposition 22 Legal Defense Fund and the Alliance Defense Fund have officially filed a request seeking the courts to delay California's soon-to-be-initiated same-sex weddings until after the November election. Because they think they are going to get their cruel, mean-spirited amendment passed at the polls, they don't want to chance the possibility that in the pre-election months, gays will show voters just how non-threatening and non-society-distrupting their unions really will be. Check out the SF Chronicle and San Jose Mercury News for more:

Regardless of whether or not they actually get their stay, this most recent court maneuver is expected to push the first California ceremonies back to possibly as late as August because of procedural delays. ::sigh:: "Waiter, another bottle of wine, please. It's going to be a bumpy summer!"

Your thoughts

OH! Somewhere I missed the notice of your little trip to California plans! Congrats. But I know the day the ruling came out someone mentioned that ADF would try a delaying tactic, but that it's possibility is actually addressed somewhere in the ruling or in a discussion just after it and it won't be allowed. Not being a lawyer I really do not know, but I believe these people have no standing to ask for such a delay.

LOrion: Because this is the extend of my announcement so far. Won't be until Spring of '09.

They also don't want us to get married because they know they have no legal right to undo legally performed marriages. Me gotsa feelin' that once the marriages start happening, the California AG may throw out the whole darn thing saying that there is no constitutional right to undo marriages that were already performed and that it would against the federal constitution because if they existing marriages were not voided, you would have some people that would be allowed to marry and some people of the same protected class that wouldn't be allowed to marry.

Why doesn't the other side ever see that the Constitution never outlines what a citizen can do? It only outlines what the government cannot do. Big, big difference.

I just typed this response on my iMac. There is no Constitutional right for me to own an iMac. Quick! Someone call in the Feds!!!

AH! Did I hear "Spring Time Nuptials?" Congrats man!

SO many things to do! SF, Weho, Palm Springs??? White Party is in Palm Springs toward the end of April . . . great place for a party/wedding! Got to book the hotel early - or rent a house for the week.

And colors - I like champagne roses, but that's just me. And then a venue, caterer (all those gorgeous cater-waiters) and an officiator - probably should hire a consultant for all that stuff.

Exciting times!!!
