Focus on the scrubbed site

by Jeremy Hooper

So just an update on the Tivo/Focus on the Family controversy that we broke last Friday: It seems that Tivo has now pulled a promotional page that had previously acknowledged their affiliation with FOF. Here is how the page looked at the start of the week (from Google cache):

Picture 20-30

And here is how that same site looks now (UPDATE, 6/12: The "page not found" site has now been replaced with a generic Tivo site making no reference to FOF):

Picture 21-17

So does this indicate that in the wake of the "Superdad" controversy, Tivo will be dissolving the alliance? Or are they just trying to scrub the Internet of connections to the virulently anti-gay "family" group?

Stay tuned...

**UPDATE, 6/11: Some people report that the original link still works for them. Not really sure why or how we're getting varying results on this. For us, the link is broken in all of our browsers.

One possibility is that if you've previously visited the site and its in your Internet cache, your browser may load an archived copy of the site rather than the error site.

**UPDATE, 6/11: A possible explanation on why some of us are being redirected to the "page not found" site: Is Tivo being shady? [G-A-Y]

***UPDATE 6/12
: The FOF microsite has now been replaced with a generic Tivo page making no reference to the "pro-family" group.

***UPDATE, 6/13: Has FOF's overreaching led to Tivo changes? [G-A-Y]

**EARLIER:
06/05: Tivo/FOF: We're recording our unhappiness [G-A-Y]
06/09: Focus on the inequitable contest [G-A-Y]
06/10: If FOF won't post our entry, we'll do it ourselves [G-A-Y]

Your thoughts

GOOD GOOD Work JH, etc. Particulary for those loving families who made and attempted to have shown their Dad's Day Videos... Too bad some other site won't pick them up. Does HRC or someone have a stories collection site? Maybe PFLAG? Would be nice for them all to be posted somewhere.
I know of two guys who are getting married in SF late June and will be going back to Florida for reception. They state their 18 y/o adopted black son will be given a prominent role. Too neat!.

I just tried the Tivo link, and it looks like it's back.

The link works for you, Dick? Doesn't for me.

Anyone else?

It works for me.

I just went to the site, and I'm getting the original (FOF) screen shot. Too bad Tivo keeps such bad company.

I can't for the life of me figure out how you all are still getting the site to load. I have tried it on three different computers (both Mac and PC), testing three different browsers on each one. This..

..is a page error for me on every test. So odd.

Works for me as well and I was never at the Tivo site before today.

Weird, I'm getting "page not found" and I never visited that site before either.

I suspect some ISPs have cached the page.

I have to ask...is it wrong for Tivo to offer the blocking of programming to children? Or, now I am not even playing devil's advocate here, do you think that if they are working with them for this that they are working with them against us as well? I know many a gay family who just loves their Tivo. I would hate to have to give it up bacause they are fools. But, I don't go to or watch Mel Gibson movies anymore; so if I have to give up my Tivo, I will.

Opinions or any additional info is appreciated.

Jeff: For us, it's a matter of a national brand lending legitimacy to a group that works day and night against LGBT people. Ideally, yes, monitoring for quality programming should be EXACTLY the type of thing that FOF does. But for gay people, it's impossible to overlook the topic that has in recent years become their number one focus: opposing gay rights.

When we first learned of the FOF/Tivo affiliation back in October of '07, our main reaction was annoyance. We just wanted Tivo to be aware of the extent of FOF's work, and we wanted to encourage them to also include an LGBT group or two in their outreach endeavors. But as this all plays out, there have def. been more and more red flags raised in our minds.

Are we encouraging anyone to boycott Tivo? Not at all. It's very likely that Tivo just needed their consciousness raised, and this will force them to disassociate themselves from one of the gay community's most well-financed and well-connected opponents. We'll see.

The page the is coming up now doesn't have any reference to FOF on it.

Posted by: Dick Mills | Jun 11, 2008 9:20:29 PM

The link still works on the Focus on the Family website. It's all over there and they are very proud of their partnership with Tivo and SafeEyes to promote censorship on TV. It's more than the Father's Day Contest this problem...just further. Tivo only took the name Focus on the Family off that page but members of the group still go to the page with the Father's Day Tivo Contest. Here is the link: http://www.family.org/fathersday/
WTF? Does Tivo thinks they can fool us just by taking the page off their website but still keep the contest with Focus on the Family? I say time to start making MORE calls and sending MORE emails.

Just sent TiVo this message-

I've had TiVo for the last 6 or more years. I love it. It's user friendly, it's far superior to any cable DVR out there, but I will drop TiVo instantly if I find out for certain that you are partnered with the anti-homosexual group Focus On The Family.

I'm writing to find out if it's true and you have an affilation with them.

I'll also do my own research.

My partner and I have been together for 15 years and I will not tolerate any kind of hatred or bias in my home, that includes alliances with anti-gay groups such as Focus On The Family.

Please tell me I'm wrong and you're not working with them.
