Maine: Lighthouses are guiding boats to freedom, not bias!
Why was the Christian Civic League of Maine recently forced to fold in their quest to roll back civil rights protections for gays? CCL of Maine's Mike Heath offers this excuse:
"The biggest reason that we're in this situation is fatigue on the part of good people. They've been worn down," he laments. "And the other reason is intimidation."
We stop and consider these attempts to pin the blame on anything other than the changing tide, then say:
"Ooh ooh -- that looks like a fun game. Let us play.
First off, we would suggest that the negative publicity that the CLL of Maine has drummed up over the years has drastically worked against them. They are largely seen as one of the most heated statewide anti-gay groups in the nation (most heavily rivaled by the Bay State's MassResistance group), and it's a sure bet that the group and Michael Heath's heightened public image over the past few years has damaged the "pro-family" side on both a local, national, and even international level.
We would also suggest that the nation gets more progressive with every passing year. If there is beauty to be found within the socially conservative upswing and the gay right hostility it has spawned in recent years, it's that the situation has created a great "teachable moment" for the population. Whereas folks could take a complacent approach to gay lives and loves in earlier times, everyone has been forced over the past few years to consider where they stand on the issue of LGBT equality. With the law, humane treatment, and non-discrimination on our side, the "gay vs./ anti-gay" fight is one in which one side is much more fully abetted by the march of time than the other (and we think you know which one that is).
So while it's certainly easier, Mr. Heath, to blame the fatigue of "the good people" and the intimidation of "the bad people" for your side's failure to roll back non-discrimination protections, we would suggest that it's instead the mental fatigue that Maine residents have suffered at the hands of your group's anti-LGBT intimidation that has more fully led you to your loss. There are only so many times one can play the "gays are evil" card before people start to have a moment of clarity wherein they ask themselves if life is really that simplistically designed. You, Mr. Heath, failed to realize that bias' inevitable defeat has been in the cards all along."
Fatigue, intimidation take toll in Maine [ONN]
Your thoughts
If you read the comments on the ONN article, it's kinda scary. Declaring homosexuals as terrorists "according to Homeland Security". Vague comments that homosexuals "will be dealt with".
All because they couldn't get legislation passed which says, amongst other things, that an employer should be able to fire a gay person JUST BECAUSE he's gay???
