'We're here, we're straight -- get used to gays!'
Here at G-A-Y, we've always viewed the fight for LGBT equality as one not just confined to men and women of a specific sexual orientation, but rather to anyone who believes in decent treatment of their fellow citizens. Which is why we were delighted to see that in this past weekend's NY Times Magazine, Yale law professor Kenji Yoshino took up the issue of what heterosexual people can do to help their 'mosexual counterparts obtain and retain the freedom to marry:
Marriage Partners [NY TImes Mag]
Because while preaching to the choir is certainly an easier undertaking, civil rights messages must break free from the community most affected and extend into the populace at large. The dots must be connected between "injustice for some" and "injustice for all," forcing everyone to consider the implications that discrimination might have on their friends, family members, neighbors, or drinking partners. We in the gay activist community haven't been all that successful in moving millions of potential straight allies to considerable action on our issues, and these same straight allies have not, by and large, taken the initiative to step up and speak out. This must change if we are to ever put this tired non-issue behind us and move on to true matters of importance (like the Dina Lohan reality show).
Your thoughts
Interesting premise, but too complicated and cerebral to sway most voters. I still like something simple like
SAY NO TO HATE
SAY YES TO LOVE,
Help Keep Gay friends, family (and their brains and $$$) in California.
BE FAIR, Equal Rights for ALL.
Straight for Equality.

Although good luck on getting people to care about things which don't directly affect them. We do live in a country that touts moral superiority yet lets people die who don't have health coverage. Where the hell are the religious when this is happening? Too busy calling tax laws godless?
I mean, aside for Morgan Spurlock, how many people can we seriously expect to undertake this straight civil union experiment?
