For those wondering...
I, Jeremy, am on line for what is looking more and more like a botched iPhone 3g launched. Employees can't activate any phones at the 5th ave store. Ugh.
**UPDATE: The morning/early afternoon was frustrating, but the phone is great. Let's please never fight again, dear sweet Apple.
Your thoughts
If it makes you feel any better, my partner and I have tried to update our current iPhones with the new software and they are kind of locked up.

That is really disappointing. I was hoping to get one Sunday or so.

I'm an admitted Apple devotee. But didn't get this one because of any "trend." I got it because I've been a very happy iPhone owner since launch day last year, and think these changes are exactly what it needs.
That being said, this activation process is FLAWED, FLAWED, FLAWED. I've had issues with both Apple and AT&T

Ugh, I wish I would have seen this before making myself an iBrick.

Alright, so here's my story for anyone who cares:
In addition to the probs that everyone is having with their brick-like new phones, my experience was compounded at the 5th ave apple store. As soon as I got to the register (after waiting for about 2, basically not-so-bad hours), the entire global network went kabluey. Every single customer who was on line was stopped in their tracks by apple not being able to connect to at&t servers (or something to that effect). This went on for about 30 mins, wherein i had to give them my information about 20 times so that they could keep trying to get it through the system.
But then, after the half an hour of waiting and increasingly awkward conversations with employees, they get it through. But then what happens? Eventhough I have been an iPhone/AT&T user since launch day of 2007, they tell me I am ineligible for the $299 price b/c I haven't been and AT&T customer long enough. That's when the proverbial steam came out of my ears. I told them it was BS and there was no way I was leaving the store until they figured it out. So they get the manager, who tells me the same thing. I say, "No way,' sp she calls AT&T. AT&T then proceeds to tell me the same thing -- I am ineligible.
At this point I am basically speechless, but I manage to turn back to the Apple manager and ask her if thats the way it's been all day -- that users sicen launch day of '07 are ineligible. She proceeds to give me PR speek, "Well we wouldnt know about that sir, only AT&T." Which is of course bullshit, as they have sold about 750+ iPhones before I ever got to the register. So I ask her again to just give me a straight answer -- is this customary? No answer.
But then as I'm getting increasingly annoyed with Apple, the AT&T rep cuts me off and tells me, "OOPS -- I made a mistake!" Turns out she had done some sort of screwup and the entire hassle was for no reason at all. So she clears Apple to finally sell me the goddamn phone, and get me out of the goddamn store. Let's just say that the clapping Apple employees who congratulate everyone on their new purchase as you leave the store did not get even a courtesy smile from me.
And now I'm home, still waiting for the thing to actually work. My old phone is a brick and my new phone is a brick.

Just keep trying. It eventually worked, it was just annoying.

Update? My daughter wants one.

What we need is a Federal Activation Protection Amendment (FAPA) because clearly, with activation being allowed in all 50 states, and now 22 additional countries, early adopters are opening a Pandora's Box in their attempt to redefine wireless communication.

While I love Apple, I have not been rushing out to get a new phone. I am still two or more Apple "animals" behind in the opperating system...
I do like Mike C's proposed ammendemant, the FAPA, it certianly makes much more sense than any stupid marriage protection amemdment. At least the FAPA would actually have a positive end result.
