Embracing deprecatory terms: A 'traditional value'?

by Jeremy Hooper

Want to see an example of the sort of ideas that have put the Traditional Values Coalition on the SPLC's list of known hate groups? Well check out this text chunk, which can today be found on TVC's website:

Mara Keisling, a man who thinks he’s a woman, is national director of the National Center for Transgender Equality. He has noted: “Gender identity got put in the draft of the platform, and then there was never any serious debate about taking it out.” (Gender identity is code for cross-dressers, drag queens, transsexuals and individuals who call themselves she-males because they maintain both female and male sexual characteristics.)

Yes, that's right -- in addition to referring to Ms. Keisling as "a man who thinks he’s a woman," TVC is also making the claim that transgender individuals in general call themselves "she-males." That is a term that is a s dehumanizing and offensive to the transgender community as just about any other slur you can direct at a group of people. it is also a term that goes against every anti-defamatory style guide around. And TVC knows this. They know that this is not a term that the transgender community bandies about, but rather a thoroughly distasteful pejorative that is only used by those wanting to rob a certain group of people of their humanity!

Regardless of what you think of gender identity protections or even transgender individuals in general, hopefully everyone can agree that childishly using known hate speech only weakens the nation discourse. TVC's continued usage of this and other terms should not only enrage LGBT people -- it should also embarrass those social conservatives who truly believe that their side is working towards loving Christian values rather than unbridled hostility!

Note to readers: While we pride ourselves on an open forum here, libelous comments, cyberstalking, and blatant harassment will get one's IP banned. This is not only our prerogative -- this is demanded of us per Six Apart's Terms of Service, section 7 (Content and Conduct Rules and Obligations):

"Weblogs, posts, comments and other content (including images, audio, video, and other files uploaded to the TypePad servers) not permitted on TypePad include but are not limited to material that:

* is created solely to harass another user;
* invades the privacy of another user by posting personal information;
* is intended to interfere with another user's use of the site;
* incites violence against an individual, race, ethnicity, or orientation;
* meets the United States legal definition of "indecent;"
* contains child pornography (explicit, nude, or erotic pictures taken of anyone under the age of 18, even if the model is over 18 at the time of posting);
* contains unsolicited advertising of any service, goods, or forum (including a TypePad weblog or post);
* infringes the copyright, trademark, or patent of an individual or corporation;
* promotes or provides instruction about illegal activities;
* violates applicable state, federal, or international law."

Once banned, no further comments from you will appear. If the objectionable behavior continues, legal action will be taken.

We could use the same logic TVC uses against the community by saying the TVC spokesman who thinks he's a christian.

TVC, Matt Barber, Labarbera and Co. all believe transpeople use the term "she-male" because their main exposure to the transgenderism is via all that internet porn they "have to view" as part of thier to jobs. You know, so they can protect families from it.

It's not surprising they got the wrong idea, because we know they're frequently confused between fantasy and the real world.
