Some gays embracing Sarah, driving us to embrace Syrah

by Jeremy Hooper

Picture 6-149Apparently willing to overlook, among other things, the facts behind her handling of DP benefits in her home state, the Log Cabin Republicans are applauding the selection of "moderate" Sarah Palin. LCR president Patrick Sammon released the following statement:

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin can help Sen. McCain win this election by appealing to independent and young voters. She’s a mainstream Republican who will unite the Party and serve John McCain well as Vice President. Gov. Palin is an inclusive Republican who will help Sen. McCain appeal to gay and lesbian voters.

Okay, we get why our gay GOP pals would find her interesting, or even express a willingness to let her prove herself. But "inclusive"? What does Patrick secretly known about Sarah that we don't? Does she own some Melissa Etheridge CDs or something? Because from what we've seen, her "inclusive" record is as thin as, well -- her record, period. And from what we know about her handling of the one real gay rights matter that's come her way during her brief time in office, "appeal" is not the quality we see her providing for LGBT voters!

Your thoughts

See, here's a good example of why the Republicans cannot win this election. McCain is running, essentially, on a platform of, "Siddown, boy, I been in this game longer'n you, and I know the rules better."

Obama's response: "I'm sick of your game, old man. America's sick of it, too. It doesn't matter how good you are at it, because we're not playing ball anymore."

(Ah, sports metaphors...)

So let's take a look at the VP nominations in context of the basic philosophies of each candidate:

Biden: "Obama wants to play by new rules, that's fine. I like the guy, and so will my highly influential friends, both domestic and abroad. We'll have more than a few teammates on our side of the aisle, and so few dissenters that the Congressional minority will have to play ball if the want to play at all."

And now...

Palin: "McCain wants to reform the old rules so that the old game runs better. I guess that's cool, but really I'm not familiar enough with the intricate back-room dealings in Washington to know what to change, never mind how to change it. I guess there's something to be said for learning on the job, huh?"

"Oh yeah, and I really hope the old dude doesn't die... That would suck."

So the LCR Patrick Sammon says: “Alaska Governor Sarah Palin can help Sen. McCain win this election by appealing to independent and young voters. She’s a mainstream Republican who will unite the Party and serve John McCain well as Vice President. Gov. Palin is an inclusive Republican who will help Sen. McCain appeal to gay and lesbian voters.”...

Goody for you.

-So you want your rights restricted.
-You want your benefits halted as public employees (Palin wants that too).
-The GOP use to be about smaller government. Since Ronny Reagan (may his body be worm food) saw the end of that by giving voice to the religious fundie whack-jobs. George expanded government (Patriot Act; Home-less Land In-security; TSA; Office of Religious Influence, etc)
-LCR is seriously drinking something (kool-aid, Prestone, bathtub hootch, etc).
Being a republican today, is like belonging to the Holy Roman Empire: you still believe, still attend mass, becuase you believe, but the same church denies who you are, shows no respect to you (love the sinner, hate the sin) and chooses NOT to believe in you....

Screw the Holy Roman Empire
Screw the religious sky-god/fable thumping bigots
Screw the LCR - PURELY DELUSIONAL
Screw the GOP

In the words of Hillary:
No how, no way, no McCain

And add to that NO PALIN!

It was pretty hard to miss Palin's pandering to the Hillary supporters when she admiringly praised her for the "18 million cracks in the glass ceiling." They honestly believe that those votes are in play, and the selection of Palin is a fairly transparent ploy to garner some of them - it just smacks of desperation.

I can't imagine that anyone is stupid enough to fall for it, but I have overestimated the political astuteness of the American public before. But, I still can't see that anyone who voted for Hillary would ever make a decision for McCain simply because of Palin. It may just be me, but I really don't think that many Hillary supporters made their decision based merely on the fact that she is female - I think it was more the fact that she is a Clinton.

Yeah, but what about the rumor, that the 5 month old isn't hers, but her daughters? She doesn't even know how many kids or grandikids she has?

Posted by: LOrion | Aug 31, 2008 3:50:32 PM

I heard that rumor. The sixteen year old daughter who, I believe, suffers from Down Syndrome is rumored to have been out of school for several months prior to the birth of the baby with what they said was Mono.

As the rumor goes, Palin got off of an eight hour flight, which triggered the premature labor. But, instead of going immediately to one of the best equipped (and nearby) hospitals in Anchorage, she drove 45 minutes to a small medical clinic in the tiny little town where she was Mayor.

I normally don't like rumors, but this one is just too perfect. We may never know the truth, but if it is true, then I hope that they offer the 16 year old daughter more options than "abstinence only" the next time.

Now CNN is saying the the daughter, who apparently is 17 now, is 5 months pregnant ((again??)). And, that McCain has stated that he knew about the pregnancy before he selected Palin. It will be interesting to see how the fundies handle this wrinkle.

If it were a 17 year old daughter of Biden's or Obama's I don't think they would have very kind words to say about the candidate. I have a feeling that their "political expediometer" will capture the opportunity to fluff up their candidate, knowing full well that they would do the opposite if the tables were turned.

Oh please, Yohanan. That is only "gay rights" through the lens of Peter LaBarbera.

How can the LCR even begin to think that Palin will help get lesbian votes? On which planet? Sometimes I wonder if there are pod people amongst us just like in that movie starring Donald Sutherland. *looks at LCRs and squeals* Oh, I forgot. it's the pod people that squeal.

Anyhoo, I decided to be just as ridiculous and wrote a blog called 'John McCain is a Lesbian.' :-)
