We find the following Focus on the Family video surprising. Not because they try to parlay gay activist Peter Tatchell's complex think piece on the role that genetics play in homosexuality in a way that makes it sound as if Tatchell has just definitely solved the "nature versus nurture" debate. That sort of discussion-lowering, discourse-muddying leap would never surprise us coming from an organization who's turned such into an art form. No, no -- the thing we find surprising is that they use Tatchell's words to support their "gays can change" cause throughout the entire video, but then at the very end, try an make him look wacky and uncredible because his views on age of consent laws. Have a look:
See what we mean? Isn't it to their considerable disadvantage to say that his supposed genetics theory is "not the only position that raises eyebrows," considering his genetics ideas are the ones they are trying to spin into "ex-gay" support? What they are trying to do in this video is refute a gay gene, and make it sound as if a prominent gay activist has just said as much. So why would they then turn on their subject and be all like, "This guy has other nutty ideas as well"?
It just seems counterproductive, that's all.

Your thoughts
Yes, but Fundamentalists are stupid and will never notice the cognitive dissonance.

It is all biological. While certain genes may predispose us to be gay, hormones play a very big role too.
Of course the asshats in the video, it's a "choice". I had no choice in this.

I have noted the ridiculous tendency of Christianists to use us as experts when they think we're saying something bad about ourselves for a very long time, but this is another level of ridiculous right here. "He's right until he stops saying stuff we can twist into agreement with us." Sheesh.
